EBC Chola Pass Gokyo Trek is the adventurous trek into the Everest/ Khumbu region which combines the Everest base camp with the Gokyo valley and the high Chola pass at the elevation of 5420m. This trekking trail offers the stunning views of many Himalayan giants like Mt. Everest (8848m.), Lhotse, Makalu, Amadablam, Kanchenjunga, Nuptse, Mt. Pumori and many more. The natural beauty, rich and unique culture of the Sherpa inhabitants, lush forest, walking over the snow, crossing high pass provides the heavenly pleasure to the visitors which will be the lifetime memory.

Gokyo valley is the remote Himalayan Valley which offers the view of the mountains, Glaciers, Gokyo Lake etc. During the trek, you also get a chance to enjoy the Dumje festival which falls in the month of April and Mani Rimdu Dance, which is performed in the monasteries, of the Sherpa people. The major highlights of this trek are the mountain vistas, Sacred Lakes of Gokyo valley, beautiful River valleys, glaciers, crossing Chola pass etc. 

EBC Chola pass Gokyo Trekking trip commences with a scenic flight to Lukla from Kathmandu. From Lukla, you start our trekking following the Dudh Koshi River valley. You pass through the lush forest of rhododendron and pine, Dudh Koshi valley, Sagarmatha national park, high passes, waterfalls, beautiful Sherpa villages like Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Lobuche, Pheriche etc. Sagarmatha national park is the UNESCO listed heritage site where you can find various flora and fauna and wildlife like snow leopard, red panda, Himalayan thar etc. The warm greeting and the friendly behavior of the Sherpa people add further pleasure to the visitors. In this trek, you also hike to Kala Pattar which is the perfect viewpoint to observe the panorama of Mt. Everest as well as Ama Dablam (6856m.), Kantega (6809m.), Kwangde (6194m.), Mt. Nuptse (7879m.), Mt. Lhotse (8511m.). The best time to go for the Everest base camp trek is from mid-March to May and September to Mid-December.

  • Day 06:Tengboche to Dingboche (4350 meters) 5.30 hours.
  • Day 07:Rest at Dingboche
  • Day 08:Dingboche to Lobuche (4910 meters) 5 hours.
  • Day 09:Trek to Everest Base Camp (5365 meters) then back to Gorak Shep (5180 meters). 8 hours.
  • Day 10:Hike up to Kalapattar (5545 meters) and trek back to Dzongla (4620m.)
  • Day 11:Dzongla to Thangna (4650 m.)
  • Day 12:Thangna to Gokyo (4750m.)
  • Day 13:Climb Gokyo Ri (5483m.) and trek to Machhermo (4410m.)
  • Day 14:Machhermo to Namche Bazaar (3440 m.)

You arrive in Kathmandu and you meet our representative at the airport who will take you to your hotel in the heart of Kathmandu. Overnight at hotel.

In the morning you have a scenic flight to Lukla (2800m.) from Kathmandu. It takes 30-40 minutes to reach Lukla. Then you start your trek and head to Phakding. You descend steeply to the Tharo Koshi which is also known as Kusum Kangru Khola (river). After crossing the Tharo Koshi River through the suspension bridge, you climb to Ghat and continue climb to Phakding. In Phakding you can climb to the Gompa to see your first view of the high peaks. O/N at Phadking.

This day at first we follow the Dudh Koshi River and reaches Zamphuti. From here you can see excellent views of Thamserku peak. Then you ascend to Chomoa, the site of an agricultural project, an interesting place to have a look around and gain an insight into the farming way of life of these people. From Chomoa, we continue our walk uphill and enter the Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park (1148sq km, established in 1976) at Monjo (2840m.). We continue our walking up hill with mountain views and finally reach Namche Bazaar. Stay at Guest house- Lunch, Dinner and Breakfast. O/N at Namche Bazaar (3420m).

Today we take rest for the proper acclimatization with some excursion. We can hike to the Everest View Hotel, the ideal place to overview some of the outstanding mountains such as Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Lhotse etc. You can walk around the Khumjung valley, Hillary School and Khunde Hospital and then return back to Namche. In Namche Bazaar you can spend some time interacting with the fun-loving Sherpa and Rai people.

This day we leave Namche bazaar and walk for some time along the ridge and then descend to Dudh Koshi River at Phunkithanka. Then after crossing the bridge we ascend in the steep path up to the Tengboche. On reaching Tengboche you will see the local monastery. Tengboche have largest Monastery of Khumbu region. Overnight at Guesthouse.

At first we descend to Debuche, cross suspension bridge on the Imja Khola, and then climb to Pangboche amongst thousands of Mani stones. Our uphill trek continues, taking us to the quaint traditional Sherpa village of Dingboche with its exquisite views of Lhotse, Island Peak, and Ama Dablam. Overnight at Guest house.

This day is also rest day for the proper acclimatization. We hike to Chukung valley and then to Chukung-ri (5445m.) from where we can see the wonderful View of Makalu, Everest and their surrounding mountains. We finally return to Dingboche.

Today, the trail continues along the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier and passes by stone memorials for climbers who have perished on nearby summits. We continue to climb as we are heading to the altitude of 4910 meters at Lobuche which is really just a few huts at the foot of giant Lobuche peak. Overnight at Guesthouse.

This is another big and difficult day walk along the Khumbu Glacier and up to Everest Base Camp at 5365 meters, the closest you can get to Mt. Everest without mountaineering equipment. There will likely be a team there about to attempt the summit. The view of the Khumbu Icefall from Base Camp is spectacular. We return back to Gorak shep for the night. Overnight at Guesthouse.

Most of morning in this day is spent climbing Mt. Kala Pattar, a small peak (by Himalayan standards) at 5555 meters. The ascent is demanding but the climber gets the most magnificent mountain panorama: Everest, the highest point on the planet at 29028ft, 8848 meters, towers directly ahead and on all sides loom the other giants, Nuptse, Pumori, Chagatse, Lhotse and countless others. We make a quick descent to Gorak Shep. Then we descend gently to Lobuche and then go upward to Dzongla.

This day at first we walk on the flat stone path for some time passing through arid valley. Then we ascend in the steep path to Chola pass in the icy trails along Chola glacier. After we reach Chola pass we descend down on another side through the stony path until we reach Phedi. From there we climb down up to Thangna. It is a small village with few lodges and tea shops. You can catch a glimpse of Machhermo peak and some others.

We walk along the glacier route until we reach first Lake of Gokyo. The trek is easier over flat path following Dudh Koshi River up to Gokyo. It is a windy valley and situated near the third lake. At Gokyo you are stunned by the natural beauty of Dudh Pokhari Lake.

This day we first climb the Gokyo Ri which emerges above the village in the northern side of the Lake. From the Peak you can see the beautiful view of the summits of Everest, Lhotse and Makalu. Then we descend to Gokyo and trek top Machhermo. We follow the Dudh Koshi River. We see large yak pastures there.

From Machhermo we walk downhill to Phortse tenga. We pass through the forest covered with rhododendron, pine and local incense. Then we ascend in the steep path to Monglo and then descend gently to Khumjung. From Khumjung we walk in the flat path for some time and then descend to Namche.

Best Season for Everest base camp Chola Pass Gokyo trek

Nepal has four seasons. Summer, Winter, Spring, and Autumn. The best seasons are Spring and Autumn. 

Autumn Season

 The autumn season begins in September and ends in November. This is the best season for any trekking route and Everest Base Camp (EBC) Chola Pass Gokyo Trek is no exception. Everything is clear and very beautiful. This season is best from every perspective. The weather is perfect. This is the peak season. Tourists are all around you. Pre Booking of flights and tea houses could be necessary. 

Spring season 

This is the second-best season. Everything is green and beautiful. The flower begins to bloom and there are green leaves in the trees. If you want to enjoy the raw nature of Nepal then it is the best season for you. The sky will be clear and snow-capped mountains are visible enough to make you adore them. The weather in this season is warmer than in the Autumn season. This season is adorable to trek. But, there is a chance for light rainfall in late May. Pre-monsoon starts in May. The spring season starts in March and ends in May. You need to carry proper trekking gear and clothes.

EBC Gokyo Lake Trek Difficulty

This trek is a high-altitude trek. The trails and passes cannot be easy to follow. There are several bridges. You have to be careful enough to pass through it. There is one main bridge that you have to cross. This bridge also connects the Gokyo valley and Khumbu valley.

Cho La bridge is important for the Khumbu region. Cho La pass also requires your physical and mental strength too. It is one of the most difficult passes to cross on this journey of Everest Base Camp (EBC) Chola Pass Gokyo Trek.

After Everest Base Camp, you can also trek to the Kala Pattar. From Kala Pattar, everything is near and very much clear. This is at an altitude of 5643m. Oxygen level and air pressure will continue to decrease. You may find it difficult to breathe too.

There will be extra setbacks  if you are traveling in the Winter or Monsoon season. The weather can be extreme this season. Heavy rainfall and snowfall only make your trek difficult. It might put your life in jeopardy. It is better to travel this season and time.

The trail is slippery and very muddy. Raincoats and rainproof boots/clothes would be necessary. Bring warm clothes. You need to carry your essential accessories.

Hotels/Lodges Accommodation

Generally, you will also find Tea Houses for basic accommodation to the highly luxurious hotel. You can also choose the service as per your needs and  budget. Usually, people called it lodges rather than hotels in these hilly areas.

 Lodge will offer you some excellent service and provide you with healthy & hygienic food. They will provide an electric blanket, WiFi, hot water showers, etc. which will  cost you extra charge.

Tea Houses Accommodation

Tea Houses are often said to be the best place to stay whem trekking to the Everest Base Camp . There are basic types of tea house accommodation which will be facilitated through the local people rich in the local culture. Moreover, prices could vary and according to the altitude and facilities which is provided by the Tea Houses.

Rooms and Toilets

Often the rooms available at  EBC Trails will have two beds in the room mostly wooden style beds. There will also be a sheet, cover, pillow, etc. All the tea houses are quite similar for one another too.

 Houses which are at lower elevation offers you better rooms and toilets rather than at a higher altitude. Toilets at these places are closely looked like foreign types while at some places there are of local styles

Packing for your Everest base camp Chola Pass Gokyo trek in Nepal

There are no technical ways for the journey, just one foot in front of the other; the key is not to rush and  you could take your time in this journey.

  • The training you should do to prepare at  your Everest base camp Chola Pass Gokyo trek depends on your current level of fitness for  any medical conditions. We don't specify detailed training programs as it is difficult to recommend the general program which  has to applies to everyone.
